Materiality and mood
Linda Hulin (University of Oxford; linda.hulin@orinst.ox.ac.uk)
Explorations of the all-pervasive habitus have, in archaeology tended to focus upon the extraordinary: upon landscape, upon elite buildings and upon ritual. Yet the bulk of archaeological material constitutes a theatre of the mundane. What voice do ordinary objects have in the construction and maintenance of social realities? This session examines the notion that diverse and ordinary objects, combine to create powerful and distinct aesthetic and sensory cultures. Papers are invited that explore the role that combinations of mundane objects have in creating distinctive social or ethnic identities.
